About Us
The Straitjacket Society is an innovative sketch comedy company with one goal in mind: Unlimited Creative Potential…well two goals, the other is: To make you pee involuntarily from laughter.
We had our first meeting on April 10th, 2005 in a living room on Detroit St. Over 20 people, sitting on couches, floors, and each other came together to achieve a few things:
- To have a company where no one person decided what was funny and who should work together.
- If money is involved, then everyone will know exactly where it is going-back into the company.
- To not only be a community attraction but to give back to the community that we’re a part of.
- To remember that half of what’s funny about sketch comedy is how much the people on stage enjoy being on stage together!
So, in a few short months we had elected an Artistic Director, a Managing Director, a Treasurer and other people to spearhead marketing, technical lighting and sound issues and philanthropy. Four new show directors were chosen to lead four new casts. Web construction was underway, dues were collected and the creation began.
The Straitjacket Society now consists of a dedicated group of dues-paying members that rotate in and out of shows that are 100% created from scratch by each cast. Writing sessions, improvisation games or just drinking caffeine and yelling, are all ways that our sketches are first created-then rehearsed-then joined with sound cues and props before they are finally unleashed live on stage before an audience of quivering laugh junkies. The results are high-energy, unpredictable shows that change shape every three to six minutes until, at the end of an hour, the audience must street-fight the cast to decide who had more fun.
